“Patchwork Bucket Hat”
Materials: denim fabric, cotton fabric, and thread
My sewing machine got me through this project, along with the Afternoon blog’s bucket hat pattern. I used distressing for the embroidered patch to make it stand out from the rest of the hat. For the embroidery, I used the hand-sewn backstitch we learned in class near the beginning of the semester. To make the patch distressed, I tweezed blue threads from the sides of the patch to fray the ends and did the same for the top and bottom, but just tweezed the white threads. The quote was taken from The 1975 lyric, “Rest in peace Lil Peep / The poetry is in the streets” from their song, “Love It If We Made It.” I like both artists and thought it would be cool to reference, especially since I also love poetry. As for the patchwork, it’s a trend that’s coming back and I’m super excited about it. Overall, this project included three upcycled pair of jeans, an old flannel, and a patch I started months ago wanting to use in a project.
