LILY GOLDSMITH

“(Di)stressed”

Materials: black denim, red ribbon, thread.
I constructed this upcycled garment using an old skirt that never fit me particularly well and always had a relatively bland feeling to it. From the outset, I knew that I wanted to remove the hem from the bottom of the skirt using scissors and then use sandpaper to further distress It as we learned in this semester’s workshop. This resulted in the frayed edge and loose threads that you can see in the images above. I diverged from my original plan as to how I would embellish the skirt and actually ended up experimenting with different materials I had until I came up with an idea that I liked. I found a few fragments of red ribbon that I happened to have and used the hand-sewing skills I developed in the workshop to attach them to the back pockets for added flair and a pop of color. I honestly have not done much sewing since I first learned as a child which meant that creating this skirt took a lot of time and focus, but I am so pleased with the end result.
